It’s getting spicy down in Mexico. Last weekend gunman opened fire killing three men at Playa Palmilla in Cabo San Lucas. Armed with assault rifle-style weaponry, the gunman opened fired in the early afternoon while the beach was packed with tourists.

“We heard the shots and just ran to get somewhere safe. It was automatic weapons fire,” a tourist told the BBC.

The triple-murder capped off a horrific weekend in Baja Sur in which 11 homicides were reported, nine of them taking place in the Los Cabos area. Authorities believe the killing spree is related to a dispute between the Sinaloa drug cartel and their rival, the Jalisco New Generation cartel.

It was only two months ago that the WSL held the Los Cabos Open in the area, and after a series of recent hurricane swells the area is as popular as its ever been with surfers. For those looking to enjoy some fun in the sun south down in Baja, we recommend you maintain a low profile and don’t do anything stupid. The uptick in violence in Mexico is real and, for the moment, appears to be increasing.
