Seth Moniz Lands First-Ever Flip In A Wavepool
Welcome to the Waco, Texas – the new site of surfing progression.
If you hadn’t already noticed there’s a new wavepool in town, specifically in Waco, TX, that just a day after the Founders’ Cup has grabbed the surfing world’s undivided attention. A few top pros visited Waco this weekend to test the American Wave Machine’s new design, and the results have been earth-shattering.
Leading the pack was Hawaiian Seth Moniz, who nailed the first-ever recorded flip in a wavepool.
While we haven’t yet heard from the man himself, another weekend visitor, New Jersey pro Rob Kelly, was there to witness Seth’s air firsthand.
“Seth went out and threw a huge rotation on his first wave,” Rob explained, “Then he was just like, ‘Holy shit. I want to do a flip.'”
“So he tried it like eight different times, getting closer and closer on every attempt, until he finally stuck the cleanest, biggest flip I’ve ever seen in person. It was insane.’
“Seth was saying the air section was just like that wave Cobbles in WA. Just… perfection.”
UPDATE: Seth Moniz was flying from Dallas to California when the clip went live, leaving him shocked and confused when his phone exploded with texts upon arrival.
“I didn’t know they were already gonna post it,” Seth told Stab. “But yeah, that section is crazy – kind of like Cobbles in West Oz. And it feels like a real ocean wave with wedges, different sections, and plenty of power. I got worked sending it to the flats on my first wave, but it’s cool how quickly you can learn out there. People are gonna do some messed up stuff on that section.”
