Watch: Ryan Callinan Breaks His Wrist On A Highly Committed Air Attempt
Will he be ready to surf at Pipe?
Over the New Year, Ryan Callinan sustained a wrist injury that required immediate surgery.
The injury occurred while Ryan was attempting a thoroughly commited aerial in early January. Everything was going fine until Ryan reconnected with the wave — rather than absorbing Ryan’s momentum, the water reverberated that energy back up through it nearest point of contact, which happened to be Ryan’s left hand. The impact caused his wrist to crack like a fresh can of tennis balls.
“It’s really reminded me how kind, generous and willing to help people are when things aren’t the best and I’m very grateful to everyone that has helped me in any way,” Ryan said on his Instagram. “Will keep you posted on my recovery, hoping for a speedy one.”
Stab reached out to Ryan to find out if he planned on attending the upcoming Pipeline CT event.
“It’s still a bit up in the air at the moment,” Ryan said. “I’m just seeing how it heals over the next few weeks, so still unsure myself of a Pipeline participation.”
