Did you know that NASA employs a surfer?

Quite a risky decision, given our stereotypes, but what is the National Aeronautics and Space Administration if not Icarus-ian?

Anyways, the employee’s name is Christina Hammock Koch (aka @astro_christina), and she is an astronaut currently aboard the International Space Station. Christina grew up in coastal North Carolina but didn’t start surfing until she met her eventual husband in American Samoa.

Being both a surfer and prominent round-earther, Kelly Slater and Christina became fast internet friends, resulting in the live-streamed interview that you’ll see above.

To find the interview, scroll across the Youtube timeline until you find something resembling this image:

Kelly, who has been interviewed thousands of times in his life but has likely conducted less than a handful of his own, asked the following questions (some questions came from outside parties):

– Is there a bunch of trash floating around space?

– Do you miss the blue sky?

– Can you see stars all day long, or only when you’re on the “dark side”?

– Are you proud to be a woman astronaut and inspire young girls like yourself?

– What do the Australian fires look like?

– Do you miss surfing?

– What’s your favorite bit of coast to see from space?
