Watch: Did John John Share This Wave With A Shark?

Given WA’s recent shark hysteria, this clip requires much closer attention.

In his Round 1 heat of the 2018 Margaret River Pro, current World Champ John John Florence took off on a wave at North Point, worked a slow bottom turn into the bowl, and shot through the tube for a high-6-point ride.

This would be one of John’s two highest scores in the heat, leading to his eventual victory over Mikey Wright and Wade Carmichael.

But was it nearly John’s last ride?

Further review of the clip reveals a large, shadowy figure in left of frame, swimming eagerly toward John before ducking under the wave at the very last moment.

Please watch it above, at the 9:30 mark.

Speaking objectively, when considering the size, shape, and velocity of the figure, there are only two types of animal this could be: a friendly, surf-happy dolphin, or a hungry hungry shark.

Considering the recent attacks in the area and reported sightings by the hovering shark patrol, it would not be outrageous to conclude that this was in fact a Great White, and that John is very lucky to still be here with us, and us with him.

Or, again, it could have just been a large dolphin.

What do you think?
