Wanna Surf Cape Fear With Mark Mathews?

Snacks will be provided.

Next to Dion Agius’ backyard Byron Bay pad, this has to be one of the more intriguing Airbnb listings. Right now, you can pay to surf Cape Fear with Mark Mathews for three hours, should you feel inclined.

For only $412 AUD, you, as a buyer, are entitled to a 20 minute ski ride from Botany Bay, passing by historic Bear Island and the entry point Captain Cook first rounded Australia, to Cape Fear itself. Where Mark will pleasurably watch you huck yourself over the ledge (if you want to get in – if not, you can watch from the ski).

Wetsuits, life jackets, and snacks will be provided. Camera with waterproof case, sunglasses, and government ID recommended. With three spots available per trip, bring your friends. Safety not guaranteed.

This is a pretty neat opportunity. Obviously you should be north of intermediate on the surf experience spectrum should you sign up, though. Cape Fear isn’t the most cushioning wave to gather your bearings should you not be comfortable on anything larger than head high. If that’s the case, there are less masochistic ways to spend $412.

However, should you be confident: Go for it. Similar to surfing J-Bay with Jordy, Sebastian Inlet with Kelly, Snapper with Mick, or Rincon with Dane, this would be an incredible opportunity to gain valuable local knowledge at an equally marvellous (albeit, terrifying) wave.
