Tomorrow Could Be A Great Day In Pro Surf

Here’s why:

Oh, am I really over here talking this up? Hyperbole in 2017 is vulgar enough, let alone when it’s predictive – setting yourself up for potential failure is hardly ideal. But when certain sources give you reason to excite, you must listen.

Earlier today, North Point was announced as offical venue for opening day of the 2017 Drug Aware Pro (which usually swings between Margaret River main break and The Box). This will mark the first time that the world tour event has been held there – though, certainly not the first time it’s been spoken about, since NP is an infinitely superior wave to Margs. As Jordy Smith told us yesterday: “Margs is a fun wave and not the worst wave on tour, but compared to North Point it’s like a bad day in California. Even when North Point is not barreling and has some bad wind, some of the best high-performance surfing you’ll see the whole year will be going down.” And it now seems like some variation of Jordy’s description may be exactly what we can look forward to tomorrow.

Jake ‘The Snake’ Paterson, a Yallingup local who is one of the best to ever do it at North Point, is a man who would know what we can really expect. And not to get you too excited, but… tomorrow could potentially be a highly memorable day in pro surfing.

“Based on what I’m seeing, the forecast looks like it could be best-ever North Point,” says Snake. “It looks amazing. The only thing that might stop this from being the best day of pro surfing ever is that the swell is super south – some south swell doesn’t swing into the bay there. Apart from that, it doesn’t get any better for that spot.

“It’s a 100 percent likelihood of them running at North Point, and it’ll be 10 out of 10 conditions. It’s going to be fucked up! It’s the best forecast you could ask for, besides about 20 degrees too much south in the direction – but I think it’s still going to be firing.

“Based on the conditions, the top three performers will be… well, it depends who wins the trials. Jay Davies, Jack Robinson and Kael Walsh will all be standouts, depending on who wins. All the good tuberiders will do well – John Florence, Joel Parko, Owen Wright on his backhand. I don’t know who is going to fuck it up, it’s going to be hard to do because it’s going to be pumping.

“North Point is a cross between Backdoor and Keramas – super hollow and super high performance, so it should be the best show ever.”
