The Vans World Cup Of Surfing – Round Two

“Kelly surfs every wave in Hawaii exceptionally well, but with four-man heats and such a big playing field, he’s not able to get into guys heads like he does on a small peak,” said Sunny Garcia at the Vans World Cup of Surfing. “Sitting next to Kelly on a small peak can be very intimidating. At Sunset you’re not worried about Kelly Slater, you’re worried about the West Peak. I think he’s the greatest surfer of all time. Do I think he’s beatable? Yes. Do I want to beat him? Absolutely. Every chance I get, I want to give him a ribbing.” Sunny, who’s been competing at Sunset for 27 years and won in 1994 and 2000, enters the event when it comes back to life (today’s a layday). His words, while intimidating, are quite telling of the game at Sunset. It’s tough out there and local knowledge is an extra bullet in the chamber. But when competition does resume, John Florence and Gabriel Medina light up, as well as Alejo Muniz and Reef Hawaiian Pro winner, Sebastien Zietz. Do not miss the business end of this event. With $100k and a Harley Davidson waiting for the Triple Crown winner, everyone’s gonna step up. Have at it here, tomorrow.
