The CT’s Mid-Event Jungle Blowout
“It might have been one of the best nights on tour ever.”
Yesterday afternoon in Grajagan started like every other Indo afternoon. Beers on the beach, post-surf yarns, carb-heavy MSG laden meal etc. “But then Shimmy Disco started playing some tunes in the surfer’s area,” our Grajagan insider tells us. “And then the Brazilian lads, Jaddy, Filipe, Gabby, and Miggy Pupo made the call. Beers. Now. It’s on.”
“One by one everybody starts walking up to the surfer’s area. Next minute, Kolohe Andino, unprompted, does a booty shoey. No one even asked him. And from that point on everyone from Joe Turpel, Renato Hickel, Connor O’Leary, Jackson Baker, everyone is just doing booty shoeys. And loving it. Pretty much the whole tour did a reef booty shoey at some point.”
“Filipe Toledo and Gabriel Medina taking over the DJ decks was a standout. It was mid-waiting period and Filipe Toledo, the ringleader, is potentially surfing in heat one the next morning. He is the best. Honestly, everyone has been so relaxed over here after making the cut it’s kind of a joke. A certain surfer said to me they’re only going to start training on January the 7th.”
“Yeah, this is going to be an impossible act to follow. It’s probably been the biggest FOMO moment of the window so far. Other than this it’s been pretty tiny waves and not much going on. There’s literally one wave, and Tiger Tracks but that’s not really the same, so a couple of guys have been sneaking up to Kongs and doing shifts up there.”
“Yeah the older crew are loving it too. Rizal Tangung, Luke Egan and Richie Lovett were pounding beers last night. Steph’s BF, Harry Henderson jumped on the decks late last night and just went old school 2000’s pinga-doof. That needs to be noted. Do you know the song Emerge by Fisherspooner? Sickest tune.”
“I think it wrapped at 10 but it felt like 4 in the morning. Filipe Toledo was first to call it and the last one standing. Gabriel has been such a legend too. He started a Konga line. He grabbed everybody and he was at the start of the Konga line. Steph was getting around in reef booties and a rashie pretty sauced. Jake Marshall, Nat Young and Griffin were still in their wet gear from their surf.”
“I don’t reckon the tour has ripped the lid off that hard in about 10 years. Vintage Fiji shit right there. Middle of the event with no confirmed layday. We broke the surfer’s deck from dancing so much it got moved to the Heli pad. Massive shoutout to Jawa Jiwa Camp for doing beer runs all night long.”
Anything else to note?
“Put it this way the Brazilian lads were leading the charge. They were running to the truck and unloading styrofoam esky’s full of Coronas that were disappearing in a second. Back and forth and back and forth. Jawa Jiwa just turned it up. Jawa Jiwa for the win.”
FOMO.
