The 2014 Da Hui Backdoor Shootout – Day One
Like some kind of perfect script, the opening rounds of the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout kicked off in the best conditions of the Hawaiian winter so far. This particular Pipe invitational is a unique contest setup that rolls like this: no coloured jerseys, four surfers per team, three non-elimination heats and the best three wave scores for each surfer determine a top 16. The remaining gents then surf in two four man heats. Highest two wave total wins. Three perfect 10s dropped in the opening rounds belonging to Mason Ho, Jamie O’Brien and Bruce Irons. One more heat needs to run before the top 16 are finalised but JOB is topping current ratings with a not-so-surprising 28.57 out of 30, and Bruce is just .05 behind in second. Highlights here:
