The 2012 Billabong Pipe Masters – day two

On day two of the Billabong Pipe Masters, we got what we’ve been waiting for; Joel Parkinson, Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning in jerseys. Joel was first to paddle out, and sent a clear message straight away, beating Pipe specialist Kalani Chapman with a 16.17 heat total. “It’s good to get in the water and start the game,” said Joel. “It was torture watching yesterday, but it’s a nervous frustration.” Joel then went on to hammer his round four heat and skip straight to the quarters. Kelly was next to compete and posted an 18.63 total against Billy Kemper. “We’ve had enough time to think about it,” said Kelly. “We’re all processing it in our different ways. If I make it through the next heat then Parko has to beat me, but Joel and I aren’t going to come up against each other unless we’re in the Final. If you’re thinking about that during your heat, you’re not thinking about what’s going on in the water. You have to be clear minded from all of that stuff.” Kelly will surf his round four heat first thing when competition resumes. Mick was the last title hopeful to hit the brine today, but fell to a steaming wildcard in Shane Dorian (who could actually win this whole damn party). “We said we’d make it a fun one out there,” said Mick. “I was relaxed going in to this event because the title was a long shot. There was no pressure on me and I wanted to give it my all and finish well. I had a good heat and threw everything I had at it.” The other big news today was Sebastian Zietz clinching the Vans Triple Crown title. The 24-year-old took down John Florence, then beat Dane Reynolds and Damo Hobgood in round four. He’s now in the quarters. Can y’believe it? Kid wins at Haleiwa, makes the final at Sunset, qualifies for tour, takes down world tour surfers and wins the triple crown. What a couple weeks, huh? “I kinda wasn’t ready for it,” said Seabass. “I’m still focused on the contest. This all hasn’t really sunk in yet and I’ll celebrate everything after it’s over.” Don’t miss the business end of this event, and crowning of this year’s world champ.
