As Sunny Garcia continues to fight for his life in a hospital in Portland, Oregon, the outpouring of love and support for the Hawaiian world champ has reverberated from all corners of the globe.
Garcia was found unconscious on April 29. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he was immediately put on life support. He’s since been placed into an induced coma to try and stabilize him. With family and friends by his side, the battle for his life continues. Updates on his current condition have been hard to come by at this difficult time.
Recently, a GoFundMe campaign launched to help his family offset the costs of both Garcia’s healthcare and the financial expense his family has been saddled with while caring for him in Oregon.
“Each day brings a glimmer of hope but it will be a very long road ahead. His amazing family have been there night and day to support him and each other, but being away from Hawaii is incredibly costly and with each day the expenses grow,” reads the GoFundMe campaign. “His children Kaila, Logan, and Stone bear an incredible financial burden – which should be the last of their worries at this time. We are reaching out to his friends and family in the surfing community for your help!”
As of press time, the campaign had raised nearly $18,929 of the $150,000 after the first 24 hours.
“We want to help support his family in this tough time, so that they can be there for him without any stress or worry about their own finances while they focus on their father and his road to recovery,” continues the description.
