Stab Podcast: Who Can Stop The Florence Dynasty?
Genetic codes, child stars, SSOTY awards, and the ramblings of a middle-aged British man.
This week on the podcast, a field study in convergent evolution. John and Nathan Florence — brothers, surfers, and the two biggest names in the game according to the Stab Surfer of the Year poll. They split long ago, went their own ways, picked up their own mess of scars and stories. Yet here they are, together again, standing in the same place. No. 1 and No. 2 in the world.
“Everything they do is completely opposite, yet they’ve found themselves at the same spot,” notes Mikey. “These two people came from the same two people. It’s interesting to see how genes can splice themselves.”
The boys dive into the rest of the SSOTY awards, but hit a wall when it comes to the juniors. Their take? Trouble’s heading this way, and the old guard better wring every last drop from their time in those boots. Soon enough, someone else will be wearing them.
“The surfing that the children are doing is fucked. It’s like nothing we’ve seen in a long while,” says Buck. “It’s just fucked,” he adds, unable to find anything else to say but expletives.
The boys start bickering over our Spectacular Waves countdown. Buck argues that Dane Henry’s full rote at Dbah is nothing more than a pale imitation of a Filipe Toledo turn. Mikey fires back, defending the kid, claiming everything about the way he moves is pure perfection.
Also on the docket: a middle-aged British man’s ins and outs for 2024, the biggest movers in the game, Dave Rastovich’s sponsor-me tape, and a glimpse of what’s to come. First episode of the year — let’s lock in for a big one.
