I listen to my favorite podcasts while working. They distract me from an often mundane routine and help me pass the time after lunch. I thought this was a foolproof strategy until this week’s episode of The Drop sparked a little tantrum from my ego. The best professional surfers take home a hefty paycheck, and while I may enjoy writing about surfing, six figures a year and landing airs sounds much nicer.

This week Stab founder Sam McIntosh joins the conversation to give us some background to one of his yearly pieces, The Stab Rich List. The best surfers in the world get paid well for “straddling fiberglass”, and Sam has a habit of digging through their finances. Sources for the stats include surfers themselves, managers, parents, and more.

The numbers are fascinating and spark valid questions like “Why isn’t the world champ the highest-paid Billabong athlete?”

Find out the answer to that question and more here.
