The global surf community is in mourning following the loss of one of Indonesia’s brightest young talents, 24-year-old Febri Ansyah.

Febri reportedly died in a vehicle accident in Taiwan on Thursday evening, where he was competing in the Taiwan Open of Surfing, a WSL QS 5,000 event.

“Biawak” was particularly close with Indonesia’s first Championship Tour surfer Rio Waida, as the two friends pushed each other as groms and into adulthood. Rio, 23, said his friend was one of the nicest, most humble people he knew. In the aftermath of this tragedy, there’s an effort to raise money to bring Febri’s body back to Indonesia where he can be honored by friends and family.

From Rio’s post: We lost our brother, best friend, best man💔 absolutely heartbreaking. He is the man. Happiest man everyday, very humble man, and bring positive energy everyday. I love you wak. Growing up with biawak in legian and kuta, He always bring us smile and laugh, very friendly. He would come ask a lot of things that he wonder and what he wants, and always makes me feel wants to give something. One time he asked me how to win, and ask for advice, this man cares a lot. Surfing so good, one of my favorite to push the level. We all indonesia surfing community sending all the love and we will miss you a lot! 🤍🕊️ #biawakforever

Febri honed his skills rapidly in the Indonesian archipelago. His forehand wrap and air reverses have shades of Rio. Prior to the Taiwan event, he had just started getting the necessary financial backing from brands to compete consistently on the QS.

The WSL said in a statement they would hold a paddle out and moment of silence at the Taiwan Open event site to honor his memory and legacy. Our thoughts go out to Febri’s family and friends during this difficult time.

You can help get Febri home by donating to the account below (note: we have not independently vetted this account but it has been posted by reputable sources, Rio Waida included).
