Power Move: Mikey Wright Drops 3 Banger Edits In The Lead-Up To Bells Wildcard Appearance

Intentional or coincidence?

Mikey Wright is an apparition.

He’s here one day, packing giant Off the Wall tubes and blanketing the interwebs for his acts of heroism, then gone for a year doing god-knows-what in Australia.

…Also fishing in Florida.

Mikey Wright was recently granted a wildcard into the Rip Curl Pro Bells, which surprised many surf fans after he’d stated his intentions to postpone competing after 2021. Flip-floppy or not, Mikey will surf against Griffin Colapinto and Leo Fioravanti in Round 1 Heat 4 (get our Bells predictions here).

Then today, out of the blue, Mikey and his filmer Wade Carroll dropped a new Ch11-esque site called prettyphysics.com, featuring three(!) unseen surfing edits of the Mongrel himself — one of which is called Retirement.

The following is written by Wade [sic]:

I’m trying to remember what has happened over the past 2 years since COVID started and my brain is fizzing.. Mikey and i hadn’t been filming much before covid hit, he was busy doing the tour and i was off doing a shit load of stuff for Quiksilver, then there was an injury, Lockdowns, no travel an all that stuff.. We did a couple sneaky missions down the East coast of Aus but didn’t really get anything just a few fun waves here and there that have been sitting on a hard-drive with no real intention of being used for anything in particular. I guess that’s what instagrams for right?

Anyway that pretty much sums up 2020..

2021 comes around, Mikey has to do this surf off thing against Leo to keep his spot on tour, Loses the surf off, gets kicked off tour. In May we were in WA with Kael and Pako shooting a wetsuit add for Quik for a couple of weeks ad the waves were pretty sick, Me and Pako started to drive back east and stopped in SA for a little while and Mikey ended up meeting us there but there wasn’t much surfing going on so bailed home.

In-between Covid, the tour and a couple injuries, this is a video dump to clear off all the excess footage off the hard drives.

Their site’s pretty rad, and we’d highly recommend you give it a look, but if you’re just here for the edits you can find them scattered throughout this post. Dump is our fav.

But back to the fact that Mikey and Wade dropped this site on the eve of the Bells event — intentional or coincidence?

Ryan Callinan once posited that dropping banger clips right before an event is actually to a surfer’s detriment, as it primes the judges to expect a certain level of performance that, if not achieved in a heat, leads to subconsciously lower scores.

Frankly, we doubt Mikey Wright cares about all that. And we’re all the beneficiaries of his indifference.
