John Florence Is Back In A Knee Brace

How bad is it?

Surf fans (your author included) were shocked and dismayed to discover that World #3 John John Florence was wearing a “space-shuttle-sized” knee brace in his Round 1 heat at the Quiksilver Pro G-Land.

Despite the prominent ligament support (which John originally called “preventative”), the 2x World Champ won his heat with ease, clocking an eight-point ride for two committed slams and a cheeky inside tube and then backing it up with a five.

When he came in, John gave the following statement about his knee:

“Unfortunately yesterday morning I kind of tweaked my left knee, maybe my MCL. It’s been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster for me. I was thinking about pulling out of the event then did some work with the medical staff then had a surf this morning and felt okay so decided to keep at it. I was so nervous before that heat because I still didn’t really know what it was going to feel like but it ended up feeling fine and having no pain so I’m really stoked to get the heat win and now.”

John, as we know, has missed parts of every CT season since 2018 due to recurring knee injuries (which tend to happen around this part of the season). Let’s hope this year is different.
