Hughie Vaughan Tells GQ The Secret To Charging
“The way I deal with fear is to try and act like I don’t have any fear.”
2025 has not been unkind to Hughie Vaughan.
He won Stab High Japan. Dropped a solid part in Quiksilver’s ‘Washed.’ Landed the best (wave pool) air ever at the Swatch Nines. Noncoincidentally signed a deal with Swatch shortly thereafter.
Could be worse.
The last of that series of events prompted an interview with GQ Australia. Despite Hughie’s remarkable performance on the Today Show, GQ took to the written word to probe the 19-year-old’s inner landscape.

Highlights?
“I remember in school, I had a couple of teachers that asked me what my backup plan was. I always thought, ‘Why would you even need a backup plan?”
“The way I deal with fear is to try and act like I don’t have any fear.”
“I don’t feel like it’s hard work.” [regarding the difficulty of professional surfing]
