Here’s How You Deal With Sharks
The NSW state government is set to sign off on one of the most comprehensive shark-attack-prevention strategies in the world, reports the Daily Telegraph. It will include plastic barriers, surveillance drones, and bouys with sonar technology. They’ve even managed to find a use for clubbies – they will be stationed on headlands to stare at the sea and spot sharks. So, basically, the new strategy is: Try everything. The shark prevention strategy comes on the back of an unprecedented string of attacks and sightings along the famed NSW North Coast – a region that takes in Ballina, Lennox Head and Byron Bay. The plastic shark barriers – which have an opening of 30cm to block sharks but stop marine life getting snagged – are set to be installed from Byron Bay to Lennox head. The Port Macquarie region will also be looked at. The decision comes on the back of history making Shark Summit held in Sydney recently, which brought together dozens of leading scientists from around the world discuss a solution to sharks. The strategy is set to be signed off on by NSW Premier Mike Baird, who himself was once circled and charged by a shark while surfing Crescent Head on the NSW mid-north coast.
