Gallery: Kelly and Bobby at Cloudbreak
All photos by Seth de Roulet As the old saying goes: ‘You should have been here yesterday’. These simple words can evoke such fury from those who missed out on a good session, particularly if you are the ASP and you just left town with the world’s top 34 surfers in tow. As the dust settles on the islands of Tavarua and Nomotu from the 2014 Fiji Pro, a small group of gents quietly stayed put, and were yesterday treated to perfect 6-8 foot glassy Cloudbreak, touted as the best in 20 years. “For the most part it was a pretty local crowd,” says photographer Seth de Roulet. “The waves were big enough to keep the island guests more on the inside. On the ledge were Kelly Slater, Bobby Martinez, Jon Roseman, Andrew Bennett and a few boatmen. The conditions were as good as they get. Six-foot plus and oil slick, glassy conditions. The swell angle was west, so it was barreling down the entire reef. The vibe was pretty good for the most part, but it was really about the Bobby and Kelly show, which is understandable since it’s not often you have the best regular and goofy footers of all time in the lineup at the world’s best wave.”
