Did Filipe Just String Together The Best High-Performance Wave Ever In Competition?

“One of the greatest competitive rides I’ve ever seen.” — Shaun Tomson.

There were 16 minutes left in heat three of round four. Filipe Toledo was leading Julian Wilson and Jordy Smith by only 1.50 points, but then he dropped what might be one of the best combos in competitive history. The scoreline says it was just another perfect-10 point ride. The massive back-to-back rotations say otherwise.

It sent the commentary team into a fit of excitement, left Owen Wright in disbelief, and is what Pete Mel is calling, “Probably one of the best waves ever in competition.” Shaun Tomson echoed those sentiments, calling it, “One of the greatest competitive rides I’ve ever seen.”

Do you agree? Perfect 10 all the way across the board?

What inspired Filipe to “go mad,” as Rosy Hodge said afterwards? “The wind, it’s really good for airs right now,” said a brimming Filipe back on the beach. “It’s really hard to surf when it’s like this, to put your tail in the water. So I just had to go to the air, and it worked pretty good.”

And just when you thought a wave couldn’t be ridden better, a patrol boat tore down the line on a set afterwards. Burning down the point, riding the pocket and taking the high line as it raced to avoid the actual surfers in the water.
