Day two of the 2014 Hurley Pro, Lowers

All Photos by Tom Carey Today, round two and part of round three were run at the Hurley Pro. Lowers didn’t quite look itself in the morning. A little leftover north windswell mixed with a south swell made for some odd sections, but also meant that rather than a bunch of turns down the line, we saw gents delivered sections to jump off. This would change in the afternoon, however. The rights ran long in the pm, with the skatepark being replaced by a train track better fit for rail work. Plus, a long damn paddle. So, firstly you should know about Filipe Toledo’s backside air, and secondly Kelly Slater’s frontside air, and then we can move onto other stuff. Filipe is on point at this event and all like what ankle injury? Adam Melling’s combined total would’ve advanced him through exactly nine other heats today but Filipe went buck wild and clocked 9.83 on his sophomore wave. The beauty of Filly at Lowers is his ability to combo waves, riding out of a wild air and into another turn. Kelly surfed four waves in his heat against Jeremy Flores but only needed his first two to win. His opening wave featured a very big, no-grab frontside air that was kinda odd compared with what we’ve grown accustomed to, but technically amazing – he covered a heck ton of distance, landed into layback and sprang back up without all the prolonged core engagement we’d usually associate with such a position. Jadson Andre, the Brazilian who some might credit with making air-reverse a dirty term, beat the shit out of Bede Durbidge with a 17.50 combo and without his board ever leaving the water. Make of that what you will. Unfortunately, he’d go on to lose to Michel Bourez in round three. As always, go get at the HOD over here.

His opening wave featured a very big, no-grab frontside air that was kinda odd compared with what we’ve grown accustomed to, but technically amazing – he covered a heck ton of distance, landed into layback and sprang back up without all the prolonged core engagement we’d usually associate with such a position.
