Creed McTaggart’s Dipped His Toes In Fashion Design And We’re Digging The Results

Stab heard about upcoming capsule over a few beers last Thursday at Byron’s Beach Hotel, pre-Electric Acid premiere.

We hadn’t seen a lot of him lately and were curious to see how he’d been spending his time.

Turns out he’s been quietly busy breaking into a new world; a world of sleeves and collars, of cotton and twill, of wearable product design!

He’s also been putting the final touches on the latest Wash record, shooting for Globe and Fun Boys, running the Rage biz and waiting for his panel van to arrive off a truck from Western Australia, but we’ll save that for another time. The range he’s created for Billabong with the help of his pal, Finn Parker, is what we’re here for today.

It’s less Milano catwalk, more 90’s core surf-stoner-flavoured, reminiscent of the gold you’d expect to pull out of a dusty rail in the back of a rural charity store.

“Basically Billabong were just like ‘you can make a line now if you want’ and I just wanted to make something different to what they’ve done before, but kind of the same – like still have the same heritage vibe to it.”

“I’ve always wanted to do it, so I was stoked that Billabong gave me the chance, and Fin Parker (aka Exotic Underground) was keen to do it with me.

We’d just talked shit for ages, come up with something and he’d just whip it up on the computer and we’d send it to the Billabong dudes – it came out pretty cool I think.”

There’s all the usual items involved, tees, trunks, shirting, fleece and accessories, even a pair of trousers to get you in da club.

So what were his favourites?

“I like the way the crew neck came out with the embroidered barbwire and logo on it. The jacket came out really sick, too – it’s really good material, really strong. Oh yeah, and the boardies!

And the influences?

“Definitely got some 90s influence for sure, with the video clip as well. It could easily get away from that time period.”

The clip was shot with Jimmy Jazz in Indo, over a mere handful of sessions, proving that Creedo’s still got his clip producing magic touch!

He also spend some time in Tasmania during Dark Mofo, slinging a super8 around the installations (anyone who attended may recognise the final shots). Oh, and the product shots? They’re shot on Creed’s clothesline by the creator himself.

Like any fashion designer knows, fine tuning fits can be the real patience tester in creating a line of threads, but the results make the ongoing sample-tag all worthwhile.

“The hardest part was trying to get the tee, jacket and crew neck right, there was a bit of a back and forth with samples.

“You don’t want the tees to be too long, nobody wants a shirt that goes past your crotch area, so yeah making sure the sleeves aren’t too short and the neck’s not too wide.

“So there was a bit of back and forth with samples and that but that was it really.”
