Coming Soon: John John Florence in View From A Blue Moon

Three years. That’s how long it’s been since the last blue moon, a natural phenomenon that occurred again tonight and was the catalyst for John John Florence to announce his new film, View From A Blue Moon, to the world. At 3:42am no less, right when the blue moon was highest. Because VFABM, made by John John and Blake Kueny, in association with the the Brain Farm team (who you know from Travis Rice’s films), will be a high production snapshot, detailing the last three years in the world’s best surfer’s life. Don’t expect the usual Indo section – Mr Florence preferred less people and more brute force when it came to filming locations (think: West Oz, West Africa, Brazil, but also of course, Hawaii). It will also feature Nathan, Ivan and Alex Florence, Bruce Irons, Kiron Jabour, Albee Layer, Matt Meola, Eli Olson, Jamie O’Brien, Koa Rothman, Jordy Smith, Koa Smith, Frank Solomon and Filipe Toledo. John John isn’t one to overhype, and who are we to ignore that penchant, but suffice to say, uh… this will be film of the decade. Sorry. Below are some scenes from the film: “I’ve always been interested in documenting my travels,” says John. “Maybe it was because my mom had us on the road so much when we were kids. She was into photography, which got me into it. It’s fun to capture memories and take them home with you. “This movie really is no different. At one point, I made a list of all my favorite places to live and surf. I narrowed it down to seven, blocked out big chunks of time and invited my friends and family along. In some places, we’d set up camp for weeks, even months. In Hawaii, we documented two full winters. This film represents some of the highlights of the past three years. “My interest in photography naturally transitioned into filmmaking. I’ve worked closely with my friends Blake Kueny and Erik Knutson for a while now, and we’ve had fun dreaming up ways to show surfing differently. For this project, we teamed up with Brain Farm, the group who made some of my favorite sport films ever: Art of Flight and That’s It, That’s All. They captured snowboarding like it had never been captured before. Super high-end production, groundbreaking heli angles, crazy slow-motion… their snowboard films actually get me amped to surf. “So the idea was to apply some of Brain Farm’s production value to the water and capture surfing like it’s never been captured before. We used a lot of fun toys for this film, from RED Dragon Cameras to Phantom 4k cameras & mounted them to different things like the Movi, Shotover, & put them in the waterhousing. This will also be the first surf film shot entirely in 4K. “But my favorite thing about this film is how we made it. The toys we used might have been bigger and more expensive. But we shot this movie in the same spirit we always have. We spent quality time with family and friends in my favorite places on the planet. We went surfing. And we documented it so we could take it home with us. “I can’t wait to share it with you.” ****
