Caity Simmers and Callum Robson are your Gold Coast Pro Champions.

Caity won the CS last season and turned down her spot on tour. It is probably fair to say Caity is the most talented competitive female surfer who couldn’t care less about competing. But she is just so good. Took down Sally Fitz, Nikki van Dijk, Macy Callaghan, India Robinson, Keely Andrew and Molly Picklum before being crowned the winner. 6 CT vets, rinsed, by a 16-year old ‘eggy’ about her future in a jersey.

Caity surfed three heats today. Was buggered after her semi. “The jetskis mean less paddling, but there is still so much paddling,” she told Stace. Sweep was wild. With twenty seconds remaining needing a 5.5, Caity did a sizzling roundhouse and finished with a finner. Got a 6. She was the best of 64 surfers in this event by a landslide. Incredible.

Also nice one Red Bull, one and two.

On the men’s side, it was Callum Robson vs Sheldon Simkus. Thumper of a heat. Opening minutes saw a huge exchanges. CR’s 8.67 to SS’ 8.00.  The lead-footed Cal, belted it, Shell timed it to a tee, a predicted Snapper wave IQ of 140. Ripped huge cones all week behind the rock. Picked off chip shots which magically amplified and ran along the inside section. Kept swinging till the dying seconds.

Noble performances by both fellas. In the end, Callum just did the kind of power surfing that you cannot argue with. WTF does this guy need to do to get a sticker on his nose BTW? Getting carried to the podium by his family nearly shed a tear. Guy had a crowd-funded CS campaign last season, and has been returning significant chunks of his own personal earnings back to the Northern Rivers recovery effort despite lacking a major sponsor.

What a way to kick off the CS.
