Breaking: Current World # 3 Jordy Smith Undergoes Knee Surgery
What does this mean for the Olympics and the remainder of the CT season?
Last night, we began hearing whispers of Jordy Smith going under the knife for his knee.
This morning, an Instagram story from his wife, Lyndall, confirmed those rumors.
As the story goes, knee surgeries do not earn you an exemption from daddy duties. But they do prevent you from surfing in the upcoming Jeep Surf Ranch Pro in Lemoore, California.
Apparently, Jordy had been dealing with a nagging injury since last year. It was getting progressively worse during this year’s elongated Australia leg. After returning home to South Africa to sort visa issues, Jordy got a new scan and elected to get LCL surgery.
Jordy is currently in 3rd place in the 2021 CT rankings, helped largely by a 2nd place finish to Filipe Toledo at the Margaret River Pro. With the Olympic Games set to start in just over six weeks, the timeline seems a touch optimistic. It’s hard to say without knowing the specifics of the surgery. However, the fact that he surfed through the Oz leg is a good sign. As is the fact that this surgery doesn’t seem to be a response to a severe injury.
Of course, we hope he’s healed up and ready to compete in both the Olympics and the remainder of the CT season—especially with the new WSL Finals format at Lowers.
