Blink-182 Cancels, Social Distortion To Play Surf Ranch
“They say it costs $6 to get in this shack, I’ll go around sneak in the back…”
This morning at the Surf Ranch Pro, the WSL’s Dave Prodan—looking dapper in Levi’s trucker jacket and block-color boardies—hinted at news set to break this morning in Lemoore, which seemed impossible given yesterday’s deluge.
But even with the heads-up, you can imagine our surprise when, in a stroke of pure, last-minute genius, the WSL announced a change in their weekend programming for the Surf Ranch Pro: in lieu of headliner Blink-182’s cancelation, Southern California punk icons Social Distortion will be closing Saturday down.
“Social Distortion will headline the Saturday night show at the Surf Ranch Pro presented by Hurley, following blink-182’s tour cancellation due to Travis Barker’s ongoing medical issues,” the WSL wrote in a Press Release during Thursday afternoon’s hour-long hold. “Blink-182, who were announced as headliners for the show on August 15, have just cancelled an 11-date tour due to drummer Travis Barker’s ongoing health issues.”
Our guess is this news will be welcomed, even celebrated.
As the WSL noted, “Forged in Southern California in 1979, Social Distortion has spent four decades trademarking their sound, a brand of hard rockabilly/punk that’s cut with melodic, road-tested lyrics from front-man Mike Ness. Their searing guitars and a locomotive rhythm section sound as exciting today as they did in ’82.”
Well, our weekend just got a lot better.
