At 11:40am yesterday, paramedics responded to an emergency call on Mokulua Drive, following a shark attack off Lanikai. Reports indicate two men were swimming between 50 and 100m from the shore, having just swum from the Mokulua Islands, when one of them was bitten by the shark. According to Honolulu’s Star-Advertiser, two kayakers paddled the men to shore, where Honolulu Fire Department personnel and paramedics treated the victim, before taking him to hospital in serious condition.
Dr. Brian Jones was in the area when the men reached the shore. “We heard there was a shark attack so I ran over there to see if I could help,” he told the HSA. “At that point they were pulling him out of the water and you could see what the shark did. He was missing the bottom half of his left leg and the right leg was just barely hanging on…”
Following the attack, officials closed Kailua, Lanikai and Mokulua beaches.
Paramedics rushed another man to hospital yesterday after what was initially presumed to be a shark bit his left foot, before it emerged that the bite had in fact come from an eel.
The attack at Lanikai comes just a week over 25-year-old Colin Cook lost his leg in a shark attack while surfing Leftovers on the North Shore. Yesterday’s attack makes the sixth in Hawaiian waters this year.
More and more, 2015 becomes the year of shark attacks in areas that aren’t known for shark attacks. Keep your eyes open.
