A Good Year – Part three

A traveller will undoubtedly solicit some incredible experiences from life on the road. Here are a few awesome and not so awesome things that our panel of surfers saw in 2010. What was the craziest thing you saw in 2010? Dion Agius:  Beach House at Debaser in Stockholm. Had shitty seats, but it was most amazing concert I have ever seen. Jay Davies: We were in Costa Rica and a guy, I can’t say his name, but he flipped the car on one of the nights we had out. He went missing and we had to go find him in another car, and we pulled around the corner and the car was sitting there, flipped, on the other side of the road on the edge of a cliff. Which was pretty scary to see when you’re in the state of mind that I was in. Then we realised he wasn’t actually in the car so we knew he must’ve been alright. We found him further down the track, just wandering around down the road. He was all good, but it could’ve been a lot worse, for sure. Ozzie Wright: Yeah, I’d have to say watching Adam Green play at South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. That was unreal. Craig Anderson: We were surfing DMJ’s, down near San Diego. It was Josh Kerr and I on his ski, and then there was Jordy, Jordy’s filmer S.K. and Damien Fahrenfort. The waves were pretty fun. So first of all Jordy got a wave, fell off and lost his board. It was going in and S.K., his filmer who was driving the ski, was watching the board float in. Then we notice these two massive army tanks just cruising on the sand. Jordy’s board is washing in towards them. Because S.K. was watching the board and the tanks, he didn’t see this wave coming and it toppled him over – he flew off the ski and the wave started washing it in. Jordy’s board washed on to the beach, and the first tank rode over it but it went through the middle of the two tire treads. The next one was about to plough over it and Jordy was like running up to it, going “No, no, no, don’t run over it!” So that tank backed up and went around. It was complete madness. Wade Goodall: Metallica, from side of stage in Costa Rica. That was fucked-up. So powerful. I was kinda just frozen there. Dave Rastovich: Three boys going through a circumcision ceremony in Arnhem Land. The passage into manhood is amazing!  Made me realise we have no real passages like that in white fella community and perhaps that is why we have so many adults in our industrialised world that act like silly kids and make so many stupid decisions. Epic to hear the old songs and see traditions like that still functioning in Australia.   Below is the video of Wade watching Metallica and surfing with the band in Costa Rica. [showvideo]
