A Good Year – Part six
New tricks you’ve gotten into in 2010? Craig Anderson: For sure. Just watching Chippa (Wilson) all year… well, watching everyone really, I try to take a leaf out of everyone’s book. But just with Chippa, how skate-tech and how different he surfs. I really enjoy that. Watching him puts me in a different state of mind and makes me want to surf a bit more tricky. I’ve also been surfing with (Matt) Hoy a bunch this year, I want to get my surfing more on rail. Dion Agius: Frontside slob shuv-its. Wade has been doing them for a few years. I think they look amazing. I’ve only just started trying a few this year. And a few more sneaky poo-stance punts that might make it out of the bag next year. Jay Davies: I’ve been trying shuvits, those kinda big-spin things. I’ve never really done shuvits before. I haven’t made one, but I’ve been going for them a fair bit while I’ve been here (in Hawaii), surfing Rocky Lefts. I’m still learning. So I’ve just been going for those, and a few ‘oops. Different grabs, too. Just watching the young guys at the pro juniors trying stalefishes and crazy stuff like that, gets me psyched to try new things. Ozzie Wright: I’ve been working on doing hang five – cheetah five tube-rides. I think I can do that. The other day I ran and jumped off a rock on a longboard and landed on a wave Wade Goodall: I like (Dane) Reynolds’ lay-back finners. They’re amazing. He lays back and throws everything into it, and comes out backwards somehow. I don’t know how he lays back and stays centred over his board. That’s like, the coolest thing. I can’t do them. If I lay back, I stay down. I do one of those lay-backs in the whitewash, stay down for like five minutes then get back up. Dave Rastovich: I learnt how to make two books be impossible to pull apart. Is that what you meant… ? Above is a video of Jay trying some big-spins in Hawaii: How about you, readers? Any new tricks in the twentyten?
