Torren Martyn, Somewhere In The Pacific
An unseasonal gift from the tropics?
Forget what you heard about the off-season. Yesterday, Torren Martyn and a modest strike squad were in the South Pacific on advice from an unseasonal blip that had recently appeared on the charts. He and Tyler Warren had just breezed in with a quiver of twin fins and arrived to find an unusually quiet lineup, complete with tropical drainers that continued into the early evening. Considered an unfavourable time of year for wave quality in the region, the nearby resorts had shut their doors for annual renovations, leaving the world class setup technically deserted.
Kiwi photog Rich Hodder (@inthedrink) spent his entire day alongside slinging his lens from the water. “When we pulled up, the wind was a bit wild,” he says. “Everything was looking pretty blown out and mushy, but as the afternoon went on it started to straighten and drop away. We just couldn’t believe we’d scored it with this many people and stayed out til we could barely see. Torren was making some waves that I didn’t think were possible. He was really moving on that board.”
