“Julian was hungry to surf alone most sessions in West Oz,” says the photographer employed by Hurley to snatch his every move on digital cards, Mr Ryan Miller. “Everyone wants to surf alone but most everyone settles to surf with a crowd out of convenience. We would roll up to a crowded spot and Julian would be off it right away, ready to keep driving to find something less packed. He strives for perfection and doesn’t like to settle just because it is easy. The day we surfed here Julian was the only person in the water. His make rate is typically off the charts, better than anyone I ever shoot with. This day the waves were big and the wind was perfect. He was throwing everything at every section. His make rate was terrible this day, however.” Is that direct contradiction of what you just said, Miller? “I just think he was trying really hard to push his own surfing. Getting out of what was comfortable for him and in turn that would mean sacrificing his make rate.”
So, like, pushing through the tough fabric of progression at the expense of momentary comfort? “Correct,” says Miller.
