John John Florence, solitude and granite, South Africa
As you already know, the surfing world now moves its eye to South Africa. John John Florence is already there, but not for the Mr Price Pro in Ballito – he’s jamming away from the crowds, as is his way. “With the traveling pros descending onto the east coast this time of year, John John has opted for a less obvious dwelling on a stretch of coastline in the Cape,” says the photographer of this moment, Anthony Fox. “Faced with a mixed south swell and a headland of solid granite rocks, this Cape beachie threw up more than enough wedging peaks for the crew of John John, Frank Solomon and Jamie O’Brien to get their fill with no one else around for more than a couple of hours.”
