You know that little pang of disappointment you feel each day when you tune into the Morning Show and hear the call that competition is off for the day? Times that by 10 and you’ll get an idea of how the remaining quarterfinalists in the J-Bay Open feel, shivering in the morning wind. John John Florence here (the only confirmed semifinalist) is in the water on sunrise every day, and waits for the call from the water. “Another lay day!” exclaims photographer Tyerell Jordaan, who captured this moment. “Wow, let’s get this thing going already! This is John this morning; He just seems to love being out there, no other competitors around, but he’s out there every morning looking sharp.”

If you’re a betting man, you might even take such information into account.
