After waking up to powering winds on Australia’s western coast yesterday morning, Damien Hobgood thought he was done surfing for a couple of days. Having won the Telstra Drug Aware Pro on the weekend, he’d easily have been forgiven for taking a day or two off. Taj Burrow had different plans though – he knows the area inside out and isn’t easily discouraged by minor hurdles like wind. He dialled CJ and photog Ryan Miller into a little spot near his home, that was more protected than other spots (although still relatively windy). The wind was running straight into the rights, making for perfect aerial conditions. Damien’s often overlooked as a strong aerial surfer, but the dude can fly. Ryan Miller agrees with the point:
“Damo was lifting off. Now he can win in 100-foot Margaret’s and also do backside airs. People better watch out for this guy, he’s got more to his game than just Pipe and Teahupoo.”
