What Sessions Stick In Your Grey Matter?
Does Kelly Slater’s career of high-accomplishment dull his everyday mind-bending performances?
The highlights of our surf sessions provide fodder for parking lot conversations, and are often the foundations of cherished memories. Though, only one or two notable moments in a session are all that will likely be remembered months or years down the road.
Maybe you watched your friend test the cartilage in his knees with a nifty layback slide, or saw the old local guy pack a perspective-altering slab. Maybe you managed to waft the fins, and hung on for long enough to call it a make, or had a laugh watching a confrontation between your semi-local friend and a confused blow-in.
Whatever they may be, these moments are the ones which will wrap us in the warm blanket of nostalgia in future years. Whether good or bad, with enough time and a few beers, even the most embarrassing accidental burn can be remembered with a fond laugh.
But imagine, for a moment, that you surfed like these guys.
How do these memories differ when you’ve made a career of high-caliber surfing? Are double tubes and tail high reverses forgotten by guys like Rasta Robb? Does Kelly Slater remember that time he almost ran you over at Keramas?
While we’ll never truly understand what it’s like to be a pro-surfer, we hope that sessions like the one featured above are at least somewhat memorable.
While some of the waves from this clip were also featured in the eighth episode of Drive Thru, the bulk of them — including Robb’s final psycho punt — were not.
