Watch: That Nathan Florence Wave At Mullaghmore

“It spat so hard it blew my contact lenses out.”

You’ve seen the wave, now you get the edit. That’s how viral waves tend to work in this day and age.

Nathan’s Florence Mullaghmore monster made the rounds online on November 6, and eight days later, we get an Irish escapade worthy of a Guinness toast.

Pre-paddle out, Nathan sounded grateful just to hang with the locals and “maybe pick off a couple.” Save to say he got a few. The one in question felt just as sketchy for Nate as it looked to us. After taking an abnormally high line, negotiating a hungry foam ball and tail slide, the left spit so hard it blew his contacts out.

“Maybe the session of my life,” Nathan says with a hushed breath. “It definitely made my summer.”

Does the land angle make this wave more or less terrifying?

The subsequent session was full of impressive makes and misses from a solid crew that included Russell Bierke, Tom Lowe, Conor Maguire and one hellman on a boogie board. If nothing else, the video is a reminder of how remarkable (and scary) Mullaghmore is, even on “user-friendly” days, which apparently this was, according to the lads in the lineup. It looks like they’re in a Pipeline-esque barrel on boards made for medium-sized Jaws.

“The boys were saying this is like the friendliest day ever,” Nathan says. “It gets way gnarlier. I was like, ‘Gnarlier? I’m too scared to do that.’”

Next time, Nathan might need some extra contacts.
