The greater San Diego region is indeed classy. Warm weather, great food and plenty of beaches. Wave-wise, it’s got quality breaks up and down the coast, and Mexico is just a really big floater away. 

Reed Persidok seems inclined to agree with Mr. Burgundy. The 15-year-old Encinitas surf/skate/fishing enthusiast knows his way around the area and capitalized on this season’s late run of swell. 

In “Backyard Bowls,” filmed by Yves Wagner and Chris Persidok, Reef handles proper meals with a trusted (and large) knife on the area’s most popular wave. Such indulgence on a combination of wave size and board is a rare luxury for most of Southern California, even in the heart of winter. However, in this particular locale, getting extra foam under your feet can be as essential as sunscreen.
