Anyone watching the Surfline camera at Huntington on Thursday night (which would be odd) would’ve witnessed a disturbing scene. Video footage picked up by the Surfline camera shows a coyote sneak up on the 2-3 year old toddler, knock her over and then maul her head for almost 15 seconds unbeknownst to her parents only meters away.

The child was rushed to a hospital by ambulance, with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities set about searching for the animal that carried out the attack and shot two coyotes dead. It has since been confirmed that neither were involved in the attack.

The LA Times reported that another coyote – believed to have been the one behind the mauling – was also shot, but survived its wounds, and scurried away before cops could catch it. The girl was treated with rabies shots to alleviate any concerns the family might have according to the LA Times.

Captain Patrick Foy of the Huntington Beach Police Department was unable to say why the attack occurred as the family did not appear to be doing anything to provoke the wild animals.
