Cut us some slack.

On Monday, August 22nd, surfers saved an elderly fisherman’s life in Ocean Beach, California.

According to SFGate, nearby surfers spotted a man turned facedown in the water near Great Highway — a 3.5-mile road along Ocean Beach — then proceeded to pull him out of the water and call 911 for further medical assistance.

After the paramedics administered CPR, the man regained a pulse and is at a nearby hospital in critical condition. An investigation is currently underway to figure out how the fisherman ended up in this situation. There is a lack of usual suspects, such as: pre-existing medical conditions, intoxication, and high surf advisories.

Regardless of the circumstances, these surfers’ acts of heroism will extend an olive branch to the fishing community.

The horror of an ongoing civil war.

Admittedly—in times of total desperation—we’ve cut hooks with teeth, wrapped lines around pylons, and committed acts of fishermen-directed vandalism.

But when push comes to shove, the wave-hungry are here to help.

So fishermen (especially more pier inclined), please consider:

  • Keeping hooks to fish flesh.
  • Refraining from dropping weights on our heads.
  • Casting lines in less surfed zones.

At the core, we’re opportunists who share a similar muse — let’s be compassionate.
