Waikiki Surf Lockers Go Up In Flames For The Second Time In Two Years
“It was chaos, man … I don’t think anyone knew what was going on.”
For the second time in the past two years, a fire has destroyed the surf racks in Waikiki.
You may recall the 500 boards which burned in February of 2020. On Sunday, a similar incident occurred at the surfboard storage racks between the Moana Surfrider Hotel and the Waikiki police station.
Firefighters were called out to the surf racks between the historic Moana Surfrider Hotel and the Waikiki police substation on Kalakaua Avenue just before 11:15 a.m. HFD said 37 personnel responded within minutes, and found several surfboard storage racks ablaze.
“Major damage was obviously the surfboard rack that was on fire and also the restaurant that was involved,” said Honolulu Fire Acting Battalion Chief Elden Tanaka. “Just exterior damage to the police substation.”
Honolulu police arrested a man near the scene on suspicion of arson, but the suspect has since been released.
There were no reported injuries and the investigation is still ongoing.
