Shark Attack Claims Life Of 39-Year-Old Maui Surfer
A tragic, fatal attack occurred yesterday off Hana Highway.
Yesterday, at 11:12 am on New Year’s Eve, 39-year-old Jason Carter from Haʻikū, Maui was attacked by a shark (presumed to be a Tiger Shark) at a spot off Hana Highway near the town of Paia.
When police arrived at the scene, “Ocean Safety Officers” had transported Jason to shore via jet ski and were performing life-saving measures until medical personnel arrived and brisked him to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
After a fight for his life, Carter “later succumbed to his injuries” and passed away yesterday afternoon.
Eight county beaches in the area were closed and “shark sighted” signs were posted.
The attack is still under investigation and it remains to be seen exactly what kind of shark it was and what prompted the attack.
From the comments on the County of Maui’s Instagram account, it appears Jason was a beloved local surfer in his community of Haʻikū.
Our thoughts go out to Jason’s family and friends at this time.
