Need a Break From Chopes and J-Bay?
Devon Howard, Mikey February, and the CI team have the remedy.
It’s no secret that “retro” and “alternative” are current buzzwords in the surfboard marketing industry. By this point, every stock broker dad will openly gush about the endless glide they get from their newly purchased twin fin. Even some of the most staunch volume-calculating shortboarders have recently seemed more willing to dip their toes in the forbidden fountain of trim.
And why not? Surfing is, at its heart, a counterculture (even if it feels pretty commercialized nowadays). What’s more punk than challenging the current status quo of three fins, 4oz glassing, and standard white boards?
We’re not suggesting anyone should forsake their love of laying rail — we’re merely promoting different feelings as a result of different crafts.
But don’t listen to us, take it from the only guys in the world whose surfing blends seamlessly with Jazz music. This clip features Devon Howard, Mikey February, and some of the Channel Islands crew — including a few high-pro guys — enjoying the new Tri Plane Hull Single.

The most prominent element of the Tri Plane Hull is a trippy looking bottom contour, inspired by George Greenough and developed by Al Merrick in the 70’s. By combining this bottom contour with modern rocker and rail templates, Britt Merrick and Devon aimed to create a zippier, quicker version of what is traditionally known to be a more sluggish outline.
Did it work?
We’ll let you watch the video and judge for yourself.
