What if we told you that some of the best surfers on the planet are riding the same boards from 2-feet to 10-feet? What if we told you those surfers are John John and Nathan Florence?

You might be thinking, “Those guys are freaks and they can surf anything well. I’m not surprised.” Or you might be thinking, “Why the hell do I keep buying more surfboards if we only need one?” Well, we aren’t here to tell you what to do or how to think, but we did speak with the Florence bros favorite uncle and lifelong shaper Jon Pyzel to break down two of the most barreled surfboards on the North Shore, JJF’s Ghost and Nathan’s Next Step. You might be surprised to hear that Nathan has been putting EPS boards through the North Shore pressure test, but wait until you hear his reasoning.

After speaking with Jon Pyzel, we had a conversation with Nathan himself about how he puts the knowledge he’s acquired over the years into action at Pipeline. Some of the topics he touches on are when to paddle out, when not to paddle out, and why you should know the difference. But in all seriousness, we were privileged to get Nathan’s insider guide to the Banzai Pipeline, a wave he knows like the back of his hand.

This is a section from The Pick-Up, a Vans and Stab weekly news show keeping you current on the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and other happenings around the North Shore. Watch all of Episode 4 here.
