More ’90s Board Reincarnation With Jaleesa Vincent
Two minutes of our hesh queen amidst some long-rail experimentation.
Trends circulate. Duh.
Something is cool, then cringe, then lame, then ironically cool, then back to full cool again. Rinse and repeat.
Over the past few years in the surf industry, we’ve seen the resurgence of 90s/Y2k fashion — from trunks to t-shirts to wetsuits.
But while the trend has reached fashion, it hasn’t truly infiltrated function. Until recently.
Something is afoot. We are seeing 90s-style boards out of garages and crawl spaces and back into the water. We saw Kolohe Andino on one in …Lost’s latest clip and Eithan Osborne with an old yellow one in Ventura, just for two quick examples.
Like most surf trends these days, this one appears to have its genesis in Oz.
Creed Mctaggart has been on these old dogs for a while:
The newest disciple of the long, skinny banana boards is Jaleesa Vincent.
Jaleesa is a polymathic creator — she surfs violent and smooth, is in a band called Cupid and the Stupids, does her own animation for her videos, and runs her own surfboard label — Pussy Surfboards.
In this short edit, we see Jaleesa on a few different boards — but the crux of the edit features long crafts, like something Taylor Knox rode at the end of the 20th Century.
Seeing as history repeats itself, it shouldn’t be long until these rockered-out potato chips are seen gracing your home lineups by an Australophile twenty-something bartender with a van, thigh tat, nose piercing, The Chats vinyl, and an imported Fosters t-shirt.
