Mikey “Redd” O’Shaughnessy Knocked Unconscious At Pipeline
Witnesses say his helmet cracked on both sides.
Mikey “Redd” O’Shaughnessy went over the falls at backdoor and hit his head on the reef yesterday. The impact rendered him unconscious, which led to a two-wave hold down. Leo Fioravanti, Max Beach, Billy Kemper, and a few others helped him stay afloat until Dave Wassel rescued O’Shaughnessy on the ski.
“By the looks of his helmet, both sides of his temple are cracked,” Billy Kemper said. “He probably wouldn’t be breathing right now without that thing.”
Mikey was rushed to the hospital following the incident. Now, Redd is currently out of ICU and off the ventilator but still on the watch for secondary drowning. Luckily, Mikey will make a full recovery.
Mikey is a former Wave of the Winter winner and a staple on the North Shore. He’s also saved many surfers who found themselves in compromising situations over the years. Thankfully, a few vigilant friends were there in his time of need. We wish Mikey the best in his recovery.
