Matt Meola & Albee Layer’s Latest Waco Clip Is A Variegated Mind-Melter
Did someone order a double double?
Ya ya, we know. Another wave pool clip.
But this is a special one.
Watching two of the world’s most innovative aerialists at Waco Surf’s perfect kicker is like watching Greyson Fletcher at Washington Street – fucking wild, but also perfectly suited.
Our Stab High Central America Champ, Matt Meola, and surfing’s biggest critique, fellow outspoken innovator, Albee Layer, rifle through a deep bag of tricks at our favorite Texas ramp, both adding an extra 180 degrees to their Kerrupts. Last week, Kauli Vaast made a strong case for switch stance surfing in the Outerknown Tahiti Pro. In a sign of the times, Albee reaffirmed where surfing is going, with a smooth switch oop that will make your average screw foot cry themselves to sleep.
Other highlights include a cameo from former Stab High Freak Peak Challenge winner, Kevin Shultz, and Matt Meola’s massive, over-the-wall backflip ender. Seriously, this might be the biggest backflip in the pool to date. The back wall at Waco Surf that you see plastered with advertisements actually provides the perfect tape measure for punts, and Meola’s entire body and board are completely above it. Sure, Matt’s probably 140lbs soaking wet, weighing in around 50 lbs less than Albee, but damn does that boy have some POP. Pause at 4:29 for confirmation.
Having a perfect ramp on repeat is an obvious recipe for progression, but it’s also a recipe for camaraderie. You genuinely can be psyched for another person’s wave, something that is rare in most lineups. Going back to back with one of your best friends has to be one of the strongest bonding experiences in surfing.
Want to do some bonding of your own? For about $1500/hour you can get yourself a private session at Waco Surf. Divide that among 5 friends, that’s only $300 each. And with Perfect Swell technology kicking out their signature Sissy Sauce section every 60 seconds (say that 10x fast), you and your buddies are getting a dozen ramps each at $25 a pop. Best $300/Hr you ever spent without busting a nut.
