Man With Tattoo Of E-Lo’s T-Shirt Surfs Really Well

Filipe Toledo and some ferocious El Salvador bonus features.

Before his sudden departure from the WSL, Erik Logan surprised Filipe Toledo by wearing a T-shirt depicting Filipe’s lion torso.

E-Lo’s move was kind of cool, kind of endearing, kind of weird, and kind of cringe.

The Christ-lion has traditionally been a Christian symbol representing courage, light, ability, and dignity. In fact, the lion, Aslan, in C.S. Lewis’s famous “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe” represents Christ himself.

In this clip — which is (don’t worry) 90% great surfing and only 10% “lifestyle” — Filipe opens up a little about his own religious beliefs and how they’ve helped get him to where he is today. I knew he was religious, but I didn’t know how much of a role it played in his life.

And it’s cool to know what makes our favorite surfers tick, be it religion or beers or both.

Anyways…

Here’s Filipe and friends in El Salvador surfing very, very well.

Perhaps symbolically, surf fans only see the lion come out when Filipe is sans-jersey. Maybe we’ll see the contest monster’s best surfing away from competition in the future.

P.S. We have a freesurf project in the works with Filipe and Chippa. (Suprised face emoji)
