Live And Direct With Mason Ho And Nathan Fletcher
“Your dad changed my life”
The only thing that rivals Mason Ho’s erratic creativity on a surfboard is his erratic creativity while spinning a yarn. Exhibit A: his strategy for optimizing enjoyment during surfing, which you can watch here.
The part of his brain responsible for turning thoughts to words seems to function with a natural lubricant, as if he’s constantly opening his eyes to a world completely different from the one a moment before.
Mason is the latest guest on Nate Fletcher’s new YouTube podcast series, Live and Direct. In this episode, the two scions of surfing royalty engage in some sizzling exchanges about their distinguished daddies.
Nate points out that Herbie Fletcher was the first person to sponsor and pay Michael Ho, effectively kickstarting his surfing career and laying down some of the first bricks of the Ho dynasty.
“Your dad changed my life,” says Mason, praising Herbie.
“He made mine,” replies Nate.
Paternal high-fives and nostalgic chuckles all around.
The conversation then turns to colours, with Mason delving into the origins of his affinity for Jah culture.
“I didn’t even know I was a Rasta when I was a kid,” says a hyper-animated Mase, shakas pointed skyward. “I just loved colours, and red, yellow, and green were my favourite.”
There’s an undeniable charm older industry vets bring as interview hosts—awkward, unpolished, and somehow better for it. It’s the same charm that made the Occ-Cast great—conversations with no rigid format, interviews without formula, and guests becoming hosts as they meander into shared memories of a bygone era. Who cares where the dough comes from if the bread still fills you up?
Dive into the art of interviewing with Nate Fletcher, starting here. The first ep contains extraterrestrial gossip with Kelly Slater. What are you waiting for?
