Kolohe Andino & Family Narrowly Escape Gold Coast Apartment Fire
“Shit got real. We are grateful and blessed to be back on our feet again.”
Pro surfer and SITD test pilot Kolohe Andino and his family have escaped unharmed after a fire tore through the apartment building where he was staying in Rainbow Bay on Queensland’s Gold Coast.
Emergency services were called to the Carool Holidays Apartments shortly after 12:30 a.m. following reports of a blaze in a sixth-floor unit. Fire crews evacuated the building and brought the situation under control within roughly 30 minutes, according to reports. No serious injuries were reported, though residents were assessed for possible smoke inhalation.
Authorities are investigating the cause.
Andino was in town for the Usher Cup at Snapper Rocks, where San Clemente Boardriders finished second last weekend. His team had already been at the centre of the event’s biggest controversy over a ruling that led to a surf off against local club, Snapper Rocks.
Thanks to Kirra Pinkerton dropping a clutch 9.47, the American club advanced. In the final, Kolohe did a lot of the heavy lifting to clinch them the runner-up spot.
Our thoughts with the Andino clan.
